A bit of History
Bendigo is a charming and elegant regional city that displays an opulent heritage in its impressive nineteenth century 'boom town' architecture. In the centre of town, historic sandstone buildings nestle amongst century-old gardens and established trees, and impressive Victorian buildings line the wide streets as a reminder of the rich history built from one of the world's most exciting gold rushes.

Today there are many new treasures to be discovered in this thriving city. Bendigo is a place where art, culture, food, wine and heritage attractions are in abundance, as was the gold of the late 1850s. Take your time wandering around, exploring the city's many sidewalk cafés, art galleries and antique stores.

Located in the geographical centre of Victoria, the city is also an ideal base to explore Victoria’s golden heritage.
  • Population approximately 88,000
  • The richest goldfields in the world in the 1880s
  • Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Jaara Aborigines.
